About

This tune, which comes from the culture of the Peruvian Andes, is usually played during the Majeño dance. Majeño refers to the liquor trader (merchant) from the Majes valley, in the Arequipa area of southern Peru around the late 19th and early 20th century. The dance, usually accompanied by a brass band, was created at the Paucartambo Virgen del Carmen festival and is typically performed during patron saint festivals in towns near the Urubamba River such as Ollantaytambo, Urubamba, Aguas Calientes, Qoya, Calca, and Pisca. When people in this culture learn a dance like the majeño dance, they take it very seriously. They are baptised into the dance and won't perform any other one for years.
